Frequently Asked Questions about Salary Tax in Nepal

Income tax in Nepal is calculated based on progressive tax slabs. For FY 2081/82 (2024/25), the first slab (up to Rs. 500,000 for individuals, Rs. 600,000 for married couples) is taxed at 1% (Social Security Tax). Higher income is taxed at 10%, 20%, 30%, 36%, and 39% respectively.

You can deduct contributions to Provident Fund (PF), Citizen Investment Trust (CIT), and Social Security Fund (SSF) up to Rs. 500,000 or 1/3rd of your income. Life insurance premiums up to Rs. 40,000 and medical insurance up to Rs. 20,000 are also deductible.

The 1% Social Security Tax (SST) applies to the first tax slab for all salary earners *unless* you are contributing to the Social Security Fund (SSF). If you are registered with SSF, you do not need to pay this 1% tax.
